Today is the Autumnal Equinox...

Today is the Autumnal Equinox, from now nights will get cooler, there will be less daylight hours, you’ll start to think about putting heating on and closing your windows.

All the above means there will be less ventilation in your property trapping that moisture which is just what those mould spores have been waiting for.

Yes, it’s the start of what we call the condensation season.

So, if you’re starting to suffer from condensation forming, act before it starts turning to mould.

Mould is not only unsightly and smelly, but it is also bad for your health.

Period Cottage Project

Work has started this week...

Work has started this week on a period cottage dating back to 1700 with a 1970 extension which has compromised the DPC and DPM.

We are having to chop the plaster off at lower levels and treat with a Sovereign K11 product.

Tiled Work Tops

We were called out to a client that had noticed a musty smell with black mould developing in her kitchen base units

We were called out to a client that had noticed a musty smell with black mould developing in her kitchen base units.

Despite her cleaning these units, the mould kept coming back. This lead to her developing a soar throat a tickly cough.

Upon our initial telephone call we determined that there was an ongoing problem coursing the mould growth, so we arranged to visit.

We soon observed that the cold water tap was leaking when being used, this was going through the tiles and effecting the chipboard below.

We used an endoscope, due to the units having a ful back, to investigate the void beyond and found heavy mould growth.

The work top and base units will now have to be removed and replaced and the wall fully sanitized.

Severe Mould

Work has now completed on this mid terrace house that had suffered from an ongoing leak.

This had resulted in a severe mould problem.

We had strip the property back to brick works, sanitise, dry and rebuild

The property is now unrecognisable and has already been reoccupied.

Spring Has Come Early

Spring has come early, however we still have a cold front

Spring has come early , however the pending weather forecast is for another cold front over the next few weeks.

Keep a look out for those possible cold bridges in your insulation that course mould growth due to a greater risk of condensation forming.

Severe Case Of Mould Growth

Latest Project - December 2018

We started working on this job at the beginning of the month December - a severe case of mould growth.

This had been caused by lack of heating that resulted in a leak, which went unrepaired for serval months and resulted in becoming uninhabitable.

The growth was that severe the whole property had to be stripped out .

2 weeks later the property has been decontaminated, ready for drying. ,

We will update as work continues.

Growth On Basement Ceiling

We were asked to look at a growth on the ceiling of a basement

This is typical of poor ventilation along with an unresolved leak - the right growing condition of dry rot.

Once established can spread rapidly and even to adjoining properties.

If you see any sign of mould / fungi, it’s very important that you get it checked out before it spreads.

Untrained treatment can make matters worse.

Not all Mould is in the Home

Not all mould is found indoors, I was taking my weekly exercise and came across this The Fly Agaric, Amanita muscaria, is a hallucinogen and must be considered poisonous. These attractive fungi often appear in groups and are a common sight in all kinds of woodlands.

Naturally you will not find this growing in your bathroom but you might come across Black mould which is a generic name used to describe the Stachybotrys Chartarum species of mould. Black mould germinates in properties suffering from an excessive build up of moisture in the air; typically in warm, humid and damp areas of a property. Instantly recognisable black fungus will spread across organic materials like paint, wallpaper and plaster. Black mould growth also leaves a lingering damp smell. Black mould also carries health risks, with the potential to aggravate existing respitory conditions.

As well as being unsightly to look at, black mould can affect your health , personal possessions, and home decor and leave a nasty odour lingering throughout the property. It can also be a key indicator to an underlying issue such as condensation or a property defect. Children and elderly people are especially vulnerable to black mould aggravating existing health symptoms.
